What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a non-invasive, highly integrative holistic therapy, incorporating a range of Western & Eastern techniques as well as Quantum principles & energetic healing tools to support your body’s natural ability to heal itself - physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually.

The Origins..

Kinesiology has a relatively short history, though it has expanded and evolved rapidly over this time. The origin and “First Wave” of Kinesiology began in 1917 with Dr Robert W. Lovett and his associate Wilhelmine Wright, who developed and published the techniques of ‘Manual Muscle Testing.’ Leading up to the 1950’s slight modifications were made to these techniques, and the growth and application of Manual Muscle Testing was largely linked to the treatment and assessment of Polio sufferers. It was an effective way of assessing the presence and extent of paralysis in each patient and supporting their remaining muscle function from the findings. Of course, this approach was purely biomechanical in nature, and today could be likened to physiotherapy and human movement studies.

Then in 1964, the “Second Wave” of Kinesiology took shape when Chiropractor Dr George Goodheart transformed Manual Muscle Testing from a diagnostic tool into a therapeutic system by linking specific muscle stress to functional disturbances in the body, then treating the root cause of the stress. He discovered that stress in muscles correlated with structural misalignments, nutritional deficiencies, abnormal organ health & dysfunction or stress-related imbalances. By applying targeted interventions (soft-tissue techniques, nutritional support, reflex stimulation) and re-testing the muscle, he confirmed there was functional improvement. This feedback loop of test/treat/re-test became the foundation of “Applied Kinesiology” both a diagnostic and treatment-guided therapy, incorporating musculoskeletal, neurological, biochemical & energetic factors into a unified clinical approach.

The “Third Wave” is Kinesiology as we know it today, having evolved and expanded from the key elements of Applied Kinesiology. Whilst it maintains it’s strong technical roots, modern Kinesiology has become a uniquely integrated and highly effective form of Energy Medicine, harnessing aspects of Western Therapies, Traditional Eastern Practices & energetic healing methods. This includes a wide range of techniques including Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Neurology, Traditional Chines Medicine (meridians, acupressure, five element theory), Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Nutrition, Chakra Systems & Vibrational Medicine Models to name a few. Kinesiology is unparalleled in modern therapeutics for it’s ability to work with a persons Central Nervous System to pinpoint the root cause of stress and imbalance, and clear it in a non-invasive manner to support the body’s natural self-healing mechanism.

The human body is amazingly complex and sophisticated, with a the ability to self-heal and maintain balance naturally.

Our Bodies are Designed to Self-Heal

We are all divine beings, our bodies intelligently designed to maintain a state of homeostasis and balance at all times - structurally, physiologically, mentally, emotionally and energetically. We are actually capable of healing all aspects of our being and maintaining perfect health and harmony. Dis-ease and health issues are common in today’s society but not normal; issues arise when our natural healing mechanism has become disrupted or blocked in some way, preventing our bodies from returning to homeostasis. Kinesiology philosophy is less about healing the individual and more about providing specific support to enable the body to heal itself.

If we use the example of bones that are out of alignment (e.g. scoliosis) - from a Kinesiology perspective, this represents a blockage or disconnect in the Central Nervous System (CNS) preventing messages from the brain (that are trying to signal to the nerves and muscles connected to the bones to pull them back into the correct position) from getting through. The cause of this blockage in the CNS could be a number of things - perhaps it’s a suppressed emotion, a childhood trauma or even something ancestral, passed down through the lineage and DNA when we were developing in the womb. Whilst some modalities may address the issue by massaging and loosening up the surrounding muscle or physically manipulating the bones themselves, the relief and results are often temporary, as the root cause of the imbalance (the aspect creating a blockage in the CNS and impeding messages from the brain) has not been cleared.

Kinesiology uses Muscle Monitoring to connect with the client’s subconscious and directly uncover the root cause(s) of health issues and imbalance, to clear the associated stress, trauma and blockages. What this does is remove confusion in the system, and support the persons natural self-healing mechanisms to function optimally again (including the movement of bones back into alignment).

Each and every person has a Central Intelligence of the body that goes beyond the conscious mind.
To some, it’s known as our subconscious, to others it’s our spirit or soul - both are correct. In Kinesiology, we call this our
Innate Awareness.

Muscle Monitoring & The Innate Awareness

Muscle Monitoring is unique to Kinesiology. Our Muscles are connected to nerves, which feed back into our spinal cord and brain (Central Nervous System). When our muscles are monitored in a very specific way (applying a light, graduated pressure) there is a subconscious response through the muscle from the brain and Central Nervous System. This allows for a direct ‘Biofeedback’ communication with the subconscious mind or what we call the Innate Awareness. Kinesiologists can then access information supplied by the Innate Awareness by interpreting changes in the muscle response.

Our Innate Awareness knows what is going on with us at every level; it knows the specifics of why we are unwell and exactly what we need in order to heal. By connecting to and communicating with the Innate Awareness, Kinesiologists are able to follow its instruction and directly pinpoint and uncover the causes of stress and imbalance in the body. In the same way, the Innate Awareness supplies information on how to effectively clear the stress and blockages in a gentle, non-invasive way, allowing you to let go of what no longer serves you and return to a state of balance and harmony.

When emotions cannot move, the body must adapt - and imbalance is often the result.

The Importance of Emotional Resolution

The word Emotion is sometimes referred to as “E-motion” or “Energy in Motion.” Our emotions want to be felt, expressed and processed, to move through us unhindered. But when this energy gets stuck and is no longer in motion, it can cause blockages in our system, contributing to stress and imbalance. Like many, I believe that every physical condition and illness in the body has a corresponding suppressed or unresolved emotional or mental pattern. A blocked emotion can always be related back to an unresolved trauma of some kind - an event from our past that we still have emotional charge around. Any time we encounter a circumstance similar to that which caused the original trauma, it can trigger a negative response in the present. This recurring emotional charge is incredibly stressful to our system and continues to cost us energy, reducing the efficiency of our mind and body.

Many people struggle to let go of emotional issues because they are unable to locate the original cause or origin. Kinesiology is an incredibly powerful tool for identifying, integrating and resolving emotional traumas, limiting beliefs and mental patterns that have been contributing to physical illness and holding you back from your highest potential. By uncovering blocked emotions in the body and bringing them to the conscious awareness, we are giving them an opportunity to be felt, acknowledged and healed, which can lead to profound transformations and personal growth.
